2024 Annual General Meeting of Shareholders

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has released new footage of the company’s humanoid robot, Optimus, and also provided an update on the robot’s progress.

In a video (above) released at Tesla’s annual shareholder meeting on Thursday, Optimus can be seen walking at a steady pace and autonomously placing battery cells into boxes at a Tesla factory.

“We’ve come a long way with Optimus in a short amount of time, from a robot that pretended to be a dancing robot in a suit, to a pretty miscellaneous robot, to a robot that’s now actually doing useful work in a factory,” Musk told the audience.

He said that there are currently two Optimus robots operating at Tesla’s Fremont, California, factory, working on the battery cells seen in the video, and that “there are quite a few Optimus robots roaming around our Palo Alto office.”

Musk said Optimus will undergo “one major hardware revision,” which he expects to be completed by the end of this year or early next year, after which the company will begin production of a limited number of robots for use in factories and for further testing.

He predicted that Tesla will have “over 1,000, maybe several thousand” Optimus robots working for the electric car maker next year, explaining that Tesla already has the manufacturing, engineering, AI and software capabilities to make the robots successful. But it’s worth noting that Musk’s predictions often don’t line up with the timelines he’s stated.

The billionaire entrepreneur also said robots would eventually have a high enough level of autonomy that they could be directed by human colleagues, and he claimed robots would be able to learn tasks just by watching videos.

In a prediction likely to unnerve those fearing a robot uprising, the Tesla CEO also said that the ratio of humanoid robots to humans will eventually exceed 1:1, and that Tesla will be “the leader in that regard by a long shot.”
