A good quality vacuum bottle (what many people call a thermos) will hold enough coffee to last you a whole day in the field and will keep your drink hot until the last sip.

Compared to smaller travel mugs, food thermoses, and tumblers, thermoses hold a larger amount, allowing you to sip on them throughout the day or share with others.

After comparing 32 thermoses and testing 17, we found that the Stanley Classic Legendary Bottle 2.5 QT was the easiest to hold and pour from, and kept drinks hot for hours.

Our Recommendations

The handle makes this thermos easy to hold and pour from, it comes with a leak-proof cap for coffee or tea, and it’s dishwasher safe (if it fits in your machine).

Of the thermoses we tested, the Stanley Classic Legendary Bottle 2.5 QT stood out for its durability, reliable heat retention, and ease of use (especially considering its size). This container is also the easiest to hold and pour from thanks to its wide, sturdy handle, which swivels out from the bottle and folds down (so the thermos doesn’t take up much space in your bag), making it super convenient.

The Classic Legendary Thermos keeps drinks hot for over 8 hours and has passed a drop test. Although it’s large, it will fit in most backpacks and won’t leak while it’s in. If you want something a little smaller, you can also purchase a 2-quart size bottle, available in two colors.

Recommended for those on a budget

This small, inexpensive thermos keeps drinks nearly as hot as our top pick, but it’s not dishwasher safe.

Stanley’s Adventure To-Go Bottle 1.1 QT has nearly the same heat retention as the Classic Legendary Bottle, but it’s about half the capacity. However, it’s also about half the price. While both the Classic Legendary and Zojirushi SJ-JS10 keep drinks a little warmer, testers found that the Adventure To-Go Bottle kept drinks hot enough for an entire day.

The Adventure To-Go thermos doesn’t have a handle, but its small size means it doesn’t need one. However, it’s not dishwasher safe. This thermos comes in five colors and comes in a small 25 ounce size and a large 1.4 quart model.

This thermos has a 35-ounce capacity and is small and light enough to fit into a compact commuter bag, but it is not dishwasher safe.

For a slimmer thermos without a handle, try the 35-ounce Zojirushi Stainless Steel Bottle SJ-JS10. It’s less than half the size of the Stanley Classic Thermos, but still holds about four cups of coffee and fits in a backpack or tote bag. The Zojirushi bottle keeps drinks hot even after eight hours and is completely leak-proof.

If you’re looking for something with more capacity than your favorite Zojirushi travel mug, but small enough to fit in a messenger bag, this model is a great choice. I also love that it comes in two colors.
