OPINION: To me, foldables are the most exciting thing in the smartphone world right now. Why? Because they’re still in an exciting stage of evolution, and each new device actually improves on the previous one.

This is a big change from the usual candy bar smartphone market, where phones, while great, tend to be a bit similar, especially in the premium market.

However, the foldable smartphone market is evolving so quickly that it’s very likely you’ll make a mistake and buy a foldable phone only to find that it will soon be replaced by a much improved and faster model.

While smartphone launches are typically spread out throughout the year, online rumors suggest that a number of new foldable phones could be coming from multiple manufacturers in a relatively unusual time, meaning you might want to hold off on buying a foldable phone for the next month or so.

More specifically, foldable smartphone giants Motorola and Samsung are said to be gearing up to release their next-generation foldable smartphones in the coming weeks.

The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra phone unfolded and next to it folded.

The Motorola Razr 50 and Razr 50 Ultra, as they’re unofficially known, are pretty much an open secret at this point, with plenty of information about both models having been leaked over the past few months, giving us an idea of what to expect, both in terms of overall design and internal upgrades.

The more affordable Razr 50 is rumored to get a major upgrade from a small, strip-like cover display to a full-screen experience similar to the top-end model, which would make it much easier to use. One of the biggest complaints about the Razr 40 in reviews was that the cover screen experience was limited compared to most of the competition.

The Razr 50 Ultra has also been leaked in a fairly official-looking teaser video, giving us a look at its overall design, which appears to be similar to the Razr 40 Ultra but with a slightly larger cover screen, as well as new features such as full IPX8 waterproofing and “AI-powered telephoto zoom.”

Plus, Motorola gave us a sneak peek at what appears to be a foldable this week at its event on June 25, 2024, so it’s probably safe to say the next generation of Motorola foldable tech isn’t too far away.

That would be exciting enough, but it looks like Samsung is trying not to let Motorola steal the foldable phone launch, as rumors are suggesting that the annual foldable phone unveiling will take place in early July, a few weeks earlier than the usual mid-to-late July announcement.

In fact, at the beginning of this month Various leaks and rumors This suggests a July 10, 2024 announcement, but Samsung is yet to officially confirm its release plans.

That said, like Motorola, Samsung hasn’t had much success keeping its next-generation foldable smartphones, the Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6, a secret.

The Z Flip 6 is rumored to continue the extended cover display, and while the overall design is said to be similar to its predecessor, there are rumors that suggest an extended cover screen again. It is rumored to be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and may once again boast a combination of a 50MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera.

Meanwhile, the Z Fold 6 is rumored to have a slightly more angular look to bring it closer to the top-end Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and it may even get a redesigned rear camera housing to refresh the look. Additionally, rumors suggest the book-style foldable smartphone will have a different aspect ratio, but it’s said to be quite long and thin when folded.

Of course, Samsung and Motorola aren’t the only makers of foldable smartphones, with brands like Google, Honor, OnePlus, Oppo, and Huawei also expected to have new foldable phones in the relatively near future.

Take Honor, for example. The company unveiled its first clamshell foldable smartphone called the Magic V Flip in China earlier this month. Since Honor tends to release most of its foldable phones a few months later in the West, it’s safe to assume that this new foldable phone will be released similarly, likely in time for IFA in September.

The company first unveiled the book-style Honor V2 last year, but it wasn’t released in most markets until a few months later, in January 2024. And since Honor upgrades its book-style V series every year, we might also see an upgraded Honor V3 at the same time. However, this hasn’t been announced in China yet, so don’t get your hopes up too much.

What I’m saying is that it’s an exciting time in the foldable smartphone market, with a ton of new products set to launch in the coming weeks and months, so you might want to hold off on buying a foldable phone for a while until newer, shinier, and all-around better products come along.
