Our Recommendations

These weights are comfortable to hold and can be adjusted in seconds, making them easier to use than competing products.

Weightlifting isn’t always easy, but this Core Home Fitness adjustable dumbbell set makes it super easy, allowing you to lift anything from 5 to 50 pounds with just a twist of the handle. The weights are also a manageable length, shortening as the load is reduced, making them more ergonomic to use.

Our complaints about these dumbbells are minor: You can add or remove weight by 5 pounds (instead of 2.5 pounds with other dumbbells), and like most adjustable dumbbells we’ve tested, you have to carefully adjust the weights to re-rack them. Lifting these fully loaded can cause the rack to snag, but the Core Home Fitness model offers the best and easiest-to-use experience in its price range, making it a great choice for most home gyms.

With their unique adjustment system, these dumbbells offer a solid feel but take a bit longer to lock in than our top pick.

The MX Select MX55 Rapid Change Adjustable Dumbbell comes with two handles with two fixed plates attached, with weights starting at 10 pounds. Nine additional plates are housed on either side of the cradle, which adds weight to the handles in a separate process. Pressing the release buttons on either side of the handles allows you to turn another knob on top of the handles. Select the desired weight, push down on the knob, and lift the dumbbell to use.

This can be done fairly quickly, but not as quickly as adjusting a Core Home Fitness set, though like the Core Home Fitness dumbbells, you have to carefully line up the handles with the cradles. The plates have a raised design that connects to the next plate like puzzle pieces.

These sturdy dumbbells offer more resistance adjustments, but their length can make some exercises more difficult, and the weight doesn’t feel as sturdy as our top picks.

The Bowflex SelectTech 552 dumbbells smoothly adjust from 5 to 52.5 pounds by turning the dial on each end of each weight. With the first 25 pounds increasing in 2.5-pound increments (then 5-pound increments until you get to 52.5), these Bowflex weights offer more nuance in your training progression than our top pick. (The 5-pound increments can feel big, especially with low resistance, and may be difficult for novice lifters.) However, the 15.75-inch bar doesn’t shorten with each weight change, making this set a bit tricky to handle, especially for smaller people. The longer bar also makes some exercises more difficult.
