We’ve been testing dryers for over a decade and have come to the conclusion that most dryers perform pretty much the same.

If you’re also looking to buy a new washer, you’ll likely be pleased with the dryer that goes with it.

But if you only need a new dryer and don’t care if it matches your washer, we recommend looking for a simple, reliable, sturdy model with easy-to-get parts and a decent warranty.

For a basic dryer with solid performance, we recommend the GE GTD58EBSVWS or Maytag MED4500 (we also recommend the gas-powered versions).

If you’re looking for an especially durable dryer that you can expect to last for 10 years or more, we recommend the more expensive Speed Queen DR7.

If you’re looking for a more sophisticated model with more sophisticated, custom fabric care settings, consider the Electrolux ELFE7637AT or LG DLEX4000 (or their gas-powered equivalents).

Our Recommendations

This electric dryer thoroughly dried large loads of laundry in our tests, and it has a humidity sensor, different cycles, and an interior light. It’s also cheaper than other dryers with similar performance and features.

This is the petrol-powered version we chose, and it comes with the same features and functionality as the electric-powered model.

If you’re looking for a dryer that will always dry your clothes, even with large, heavy loads of laundry, we recommend the GE GTD58EBSVWS. This machine’s large capacity, intuitive operation, and various cycles make it a dryer you can rely on.

The GTD58EBSVWS is not Energy Star certified and comes with a one-year limited warranty.

In our washer and dryer combo guide, we recommend the GE GTW585BSVWS washer.

Our Recommendations

This electric dryer is easy to use and handled large loads of laundry effectively in our testing.

This gas-powered version we chose is similarly easy to use and effective for drying large loads of laundry.

The Maytag MED4500 is a basic, reliable electric dryer that has fewer features than some of the more expensive options but dries just as well.

It has an easy to use dial control and easy cycle, making it perfect for those who hate fiddling with buttons and settings.

It takes a little longer to dry than others and doesn’t have a speed-dry option, but it gets the job done and is a few hundred dollars cheaper than similar dryers.

The MED4500 is not Energy Star certified and comes with a one-year warranty.

The Maytag MVW4505MW is a top-loading washing machine that is compatible with this machine.

Choose your upgrade

These electric dryers are effective and reliable, and they come with perks other machines don’t, like a longer warranty and cycles that reduce residual pet hair. However, these perks come with a hefty price tag.

If you’re looking for a well-made dryer with a longer warranty and extra features, the Speed Queen DR7 is a proven choice.

Speed Queen washers and dryers are heavy-duty machines built to last for decades and are typically made for laundromats, but can also be purchased for home use. Speed Queen machines are durable, but they come at a high price.

The DR7 is Energy Star certified and has anti-static features and cycles that are hard to find in other machines, like a pet hair cycle that removed a fair amount of golden retriever hair during testing. This machine also comes with a seven-year warranty, the longest of any of our picks.

Unlike other sensor-driven dryers we’ve tested, this one accurately predicted the drying time every time. However, Electrolux’s customer service is only so-so.

The gasoline powered versions of our great products have sensor drying settings that are just as effective and accurate as the electric versions.

The Electrolux ELFE7637AT performed well in our tests, consistently finishing laundry dry without overheating. With 8 cubic feet of capacity, the largest of any of our recommendations, this machine can easily handle king-size comforters and a variety of other laundry items.

It features a reversible door, and in testing, the sensor dry setting got items dry every time. Unlike other sensor-driven dryers we’ve tested, the ELFE7637AT accurately predicts drying time within 90 seconds of starting the cycle, making it convenient for planning ahead.

It is also Energy Star certified and comes with a one-year warranty.

Our washer and dryer combo guide recommends the combo-compatible Electrolux ELFW7637A washer.

This electric dryer is well-made and effective, but LG’s customer service can be unreliable.

The petrol-powered version of this fantastic product that we have chosen is essentially the same built and effective machine.

The LG DLEX4000 is one of the fastest, most thorough dryers we’ve tested, and this Wi-Fi-enabled model connects to LG’s ThinQ app, allowing you to monitor cycles, receive maintenance alerts, and start the machine remotely.

LG washers and dryers have a strong track record of reliability, and we receive the fewest reader complaints about LG equipment.

The DLEX4000 has been known for years for its excellent performance, and we’ve been recommending LG washer and dryer models since 2016.

However, LG’s customer service isn’t as strong as other brands of home appliances that we recommend.

The DLEX4000 is Energy Star certified and comes with a one-year warranty.

Our washer and dryer combo guide recommends the combo-able, stackable LG WM4000H washer.
